An overview with some problems

"Experiencing the World's Religions" by Michael Malloy covers the major religions of the world. While well written and easy to comprehend, Malloy's presuppositions at times stand in the way of an objective presentation of the material. For instance, when he presents Judaism's timeline, he calls Abraham "legendary." Whether Abraham is legendary or a historical figure is a matter of dispute among scholars. His section on Christianity includes a chart that notes the dates when the books of the Christian New Testament were written. Malloy assigns the latest dates possible, even though many scholars who reject the divine inspiration of the Bible have come to the conclusion that the books were written at much earlier dates than was at one time assumed. Nevertheless, Malloy gives these late dates to the writing of the New Testament books as though they were an established fact. On the other hand, in the same chart he lists "Hebrews" as a Pauline Epistles, even though almost every scholar (conservative or liberal) rejects the book’s Pauline authorship. This is sloppy scholarship. These are a few instances of those I've found in his description of the religions with which I am most familiar. It makes me wonder how accurate he is in his description and analysis of the other religions.
